Farm management software is easy to shop for on features and hard to evaluate on fit. Nearly every product in the category will list batch tracking, inventory, and financial reporting on its homepage. The differences that actually matter show up once you look past the list, at how the software was actually built.
The first thing worth checking is whether the product was designed for livestock and agriculture from the ground up, or adapted from a generic ERP or a crop-farming tool. This shows up in small but telling ways: does the software assume one species is the default and treat everything else as an afterthought? Can it handle a farm that sells both live animals and production output, or only one of the two? Generic tools tend to bend uncomfortably around agricultural specifics; purpose-built tools don't need to bend at all.
The second thing to check is whether financial and operational data actually share a system, or whether they live in two separate tools that require manual reconciliation. A sale that doesn't automatically post to the general ledger, or a production cost that has to be entered twice, is a sign the "integration" is really just an export button.
The third thing is workflow, not just data storage. Does the software enforce an approval chain for purchases, or just record that a purchase happened? Does it require a supervisor to review a day's operations before feed inventory is deducted, or does it deduct on entry with no review step at all? These process details are usually invisible in a sales demo and very visible six months into daily use.
The fourth thing, often the most overlooked, is traceability: can a specific sale be traced back to the batch, and the day, it came from, without a manual investigation? This matters far more the first time a customer disputes a delivery, or a regulator asks a question, than it does on the day you sign up.
None of this is an argument for or against any specific product. It's an argument for looking past the feature list and asking how the software actually behaves under the conditions a real farm operates in: multiple species, mixed commercial models, daily operational pressure, and the occasional dispute that needs a fast, confident answer.
